The most important single command in the Qur’an

The most important single command in the Qur’an is the command of Tawḥīd - worshiping Allah alone without partners.

Allah says: “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him.” [Qur’an 17:23]

This command - worship Allah alone - is the foundation of Islam.
All other commands (prayer, fasting, charity, good character, justice, etc.) come after it.

“Worship Allah Alone” (Tawḥīd) is the Most Important:

It’s the Purpose of Creation.
Allah says: “I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.” [Qur’an 51:56]
This shows the whole reason we exist is to recognize, love, obey, and worship Allah alone.

It’s the First Command of Every Prophet.
Every messenger brought this same central message“Worship Allah; you have no god other than Him.” [Qur’an 7:59, 7:65, 7:73, etc.]

It’s the Key to Salvation.
The Prophet  said: “Whoever dies while knowing that there is no god but Allah will enter Paradise.” [Muslim]
This means the foundation of salvation is correct belief in Allah’s Oneness.

It Comes Before All Acts of Worship.
Ṣalāh (prayer), Ṣawm (fasting), Zakāh (charity), Ḥajj (pilgrimage) - all are meaningless without Tawḥīd.
If someone prays but associates partners with Allah (shirk), the prayer is invalid.

It Protects from the Greatest Sin.
The greatest sin in Islam is shirk (associating partners with Allah). Allah says: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives anything less for whom He wills.” [Qur’an 4:48]
