The Qur’an on Maintaining Concentration in Prayer
He ﷺ also said: “If the one who passes in front of a worshipper knew how great a sin it is, it would be better for him to stand for forty [years] than to pass in front of him.” [Sahih al-Bukhari: 510; Sahih Muslim: 507]
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The Sutrah of a worshipper should be like the back of a camel’s saddle.” [Sahih Muslim: 506]
Benefits of Using a Sutrah
-
Maintains focus and concentration in prayer.
-
Preserves the dignity and sanctity of the act of worship.
-
Protects others from falling into sin by passing in front.
-
Ensures adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
Ṣalāh is the pillar of Islam, and the Sutrah is an important Sunnah that safeguards the quality and sanctity of prayer. The Qur’an calls for humility and focus in worship, while the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated its practical application through the use of a Sutrah. Every Muslim should strive to follow this Sunnah to perfect his prayer, maintain concentration, and prevent others from committing sin.
