The importance of using a sutrah in salah

Prayer (Ṣalāh) is the most important act of worship in Islam. It establishes a direct connection between the servant and his Lord. Among the etiquettes and rulings of prayer is the use of a Sutrahan object placed in front of the worshipper to prevent others from passing directly in front of him. The concept of Sutrah is emphasized in both the Qur’an and authentic Hadith.

The Qur’an on Maintaining Concentration in Prayer

Allah the Almighty says: And stand before Allah with devotion and obedience. [(Sūrat al-Baqarah 238]

This verse instructs believers to stand before Allah with humility and concentration. When someone passes in front of a worshipper, it breaks his focus and humility. Thus, the use of a Sutrah helps to fulfill the Qur’anic command of maintaining devotion in prayer.

The Sunnah on the Sutrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When one of you prays, he should pray toward a Sutrah and draw close to it.” [Sahih Muslim: 507]

He ﷺ also said: “If the one who passes in front of a worshipper knew how great a sin it is, it would be better for him to stand for forty [years] than to pass in front of him.” [Sahih al-Bukhari: 510; Sahih Muslim: 507]

Abu Juhaifah (RA) reported: A spear was planted before the Prophet ﷺ, and he prayed behind it. [Sahih al-Bukhari: 502]

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The Sutrah of a worshipper should be like the back of a camel’s saddle.” [Sahih Muslim: 506]

Benefits of Using a Sutrah

  1. Maintains focus and concentration in prayer.

  2. Preserves the dignity and sanctity of the act of worship.

  3. Protects others from falling into sin by passing in front.

  4. Ensures adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

Ṣalāh is the pillar of Islam, and the Sutrah is an important Sunnah that safeguards the quality and sanctity of prayer. The Qur’an calls for humility and focus in worship, while the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated its practical application through the use of a Sutrah. Every Muslim should strive to follow this Sunnah to perfect his prayer, maintain concentration, and prevent others from committing sin.
