Tasbih is a string of small beads that Muslims use for dhikr (glorification of Allah). But the question is—Is it permissible according to the Qur’an and authentic Hadith?
1. Guidance from Qur’an and Authentic Hadith
Qur’an:
·
“O you who believe!
Remember Allah with much remembrance.” (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:41)
·
“They glorify Him day and
night, and they do not slacken.” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:20)
Authentic
Hadith:
·
“Count your glorifications
(tasbih) on your fingers, for they will be questioned and will testify for you
on the Day of Judgment.” (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Jumu‘ah, Hadith 74)
Nowhere in the Qur’an or Hadith is the use of
tasbih (beads) instructed. The Prophet ﷺ
instructed using fingers or hands.
2. Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) Analysis
·
Using fingers or hands → Sunnah → In line with the Prophet’s
guidance; fingers will testify on the Day of Judgment.
·
Using for ease in counting → Bid‘ah (innovation) → Not
following the Sunnah; a new practice introduced.
·
Imitating non-Muslim practices → Haram → Going against
Sunnah, resembling shirk (polytheism) or superstition.
·
Using for showing off (riya) → Haram → The true purpose
of worship is lost.
·
Waste of money and carrying unnecessary items → Haram →
Extravagance is forbidden in Islam.
3. Final Conclusion
Using fingers or hands for tasbih is best,
Sunnah, and safe.
Using tasbih beads—even if only for ease of
counting—is not following the Sunnah; hence it is considered bid‘ah and haram.
Carrying tasbih may lead to showing off and
wasting money; therefore, it is prohibited.
According to the Qur’an and authentic Hadith,
using tasbih (beads) is bid‘ah and haram. Muslims should follow the Sunnah of
the Prophet ﷺ by using their
fingers or hands, which will be accepted as witnesses on the Day of Judgment.
